How to Protect and Maintain Gutters

Why Clean My Gutters?

Regularly cleaning gutters goes a long way in preserving your property, especially here in South Jersey amid the many oak trees and pines! Spare your roof, siding, foundation and garden from costly water damage, saving you time and money.

Downside to Blocked Downspout

When ignored, a blocked downspout causes all kinds of problems.

  • Overflowing water will back up under your roof’s shingles and either freeze (creating an ice dam) or soak and rot the roof’s underlayment and eaves.
  • Similarly, water continually flowing over your home’s siding will encourage mildew growth on both sides of the facing.
  • A broken downspout will also compromise the foundation of your home. Pooling water erodes the soil around your home’s footings, eventually damaging and cracking the cement.
  • In addition, undirected water washes away the topsoil of your gardens, creating gullies and leaving your plants’ and shrubs’ roots unprotected.

How Often Should I Clean My Gutters?

Clean your gutters at least twice a year, in the spring after pollen season and in the fall after most of the leaves around your house have fallen. If your home is surrounded primarily by deciduous trees, unclog your gutters even more often, adding mid-summer cleaning to make sure rain and wind haven’t clogged up the downspouts with leaves and sticks. Lastly, always check your gutters for damage and debris after a bad storm, regardless of the season.
